Mrs. Broz - Science - Grade 8 sbroz@houstonisd.org ext. 378 Tutorials Wednesday and Friday Morning @ 8:00 am In Grade 8, the study of science includes lecture (note taking), quality-questioning techniques, research, inquiry based laboratory investigations using cooperative learning groups, and assessments. During laboratory investigations the students will:
Students use interactive notebooks to help them collect and organize their work. These notebooks contain all work done in this class and parents are encouraged to review the notebooks often. The notebooks must be brought to class daily. Units studied: First Semester 1. Introduction to Science 2. Interdependence of Living Systems 3. Genetics 4. Earth Systems and Geological Processes 5. Earth Systems and Human Impact 6. Light and the Universe Second Semester 7. Chemical Interactions 8. Motion and Forces, Energy and Waves 9. Climate and Climate Change Remember that 8th graders take the Science TAKS test in the spring!!!!!!!!!! Science Fair All GT students will work on a science fair project. It will consist of a notebook, a display board, an abstract and an oral presentation. Students will need a composition notebook and a 3 paneled board for their science fair project. Supplies 1. 2 Composition Notebooks – 100 sheets – NO SPIRAL NOTEBOOKS (Bring one now and keep the other at home until you need it) 2. Pencils (bring to class every day) 3. 2 Red pens(Leave in classroom) 4. 1 pkg. Paper towels (Leave in classroom) 5. 1 bottle Liquid Hand Soap (Leave in classroom) 6. 1 pkg. Graph Paper(Leave in classroom) Classroom Rules · Come to class on time (In your seat when the tardy bell rings). · Attend to personal needs before coming to class. You may not go to your locker and restroom needs will be dealt with on an emergency basis only. · Bring required materials every day. · Copy the homework assignment in your agenda then begin the warm up activity when the tardy bell rings. Directions will be on the projection screen or the board. · Remain in your assigned seat unless you have permission to get up. Throw scraps away at the end of the period on your way out. · Always respect the speaker. One person speaks at a time. · Do your own work, cheating will result in a zero for that assignment. · Follow the school rules. · Respect your teacher and classmates. Conduct Grades Failure to follow the rules will result in a conduct cut. Class Grades Tests/projects 40% Daily work/participation 25 % Labs 25% Homework 10%
