Ms. Ruddy's Literacy Class

Hello Parents!

Welcome back to another exciting school year!  This year we will be combining reading and english in one class that we'll be calling literacy.  The students will improve their reading and writing skills by spending more time in the classroom (and at home) doing just that - reading and writing!

The schedule in the classroom is consistent from day to day so that the students can get comfortable in the routine.  Each class starts with a "mini-lesson" where we examine some aspect of reading and then students "break out" to different parts of the room to practice the strategies we've been learning while reading any novel of their choice.  By reading books they love and practicing the strategies we learn in class, students will become stronger, more fluent readers.  During their reading time, I'll be conferencing with individual students to make sure they are understanding the material.

Midway through the period, I will call students back to the gathering area so that we can switch gears and move into writing.  Similarly to reading, we will have a "mini-lesson" to learn a new skill and students will "break out" once again to practice that skill in their writing while I meet with them individually.

Each night, students will be required to read their current novel for 30 minutes and document it in their reading log, and write an entry in their writer's notebook (WNB).

THIS WEEK - Students are working on: *revising their drafts for their writing projects *making notes about the characters in their novels

Each student will be required to complete the following:

Keep a Writer’s Notebook (WNB)

Keep a Literacy Notebook that contains a reading log

Maintain a ‘works in progress’ folder and a final draft folder in the classroom

Complete all required writing assignments in a timely fashion

Complete all required reading assignments, including independent reading, in a timely fashion

Work with another student or group of students as peer editor

Word-process all final drafts

Show respect for the work of others and demand respect for one’s own work

Confer with the teacher on a weekly basis
