YAM is a regional art contest held each year.  Work from our entire greaterHoustonarea is submitted.  Ryan Suffridge and Rand Green have won this contest this year!!  Congratulations to these students!  Their work will be seen in a special exhibit held at theGlassellSchoolacross from theMuseumofFine Artsin the month of March. Their families will be invited to an awards ceremony.  Excellent work Rand and Ryan!!

 

Pershing Takes 6 of the 8 Spots for Capitol Show Competiton

Each year, HISD selects 8 exceptional works of student art to compete in a state wide contest in Austin-The Capitol Show.  Six of the eight pieces this year were created by Pershing art students!  Big congratulations to the following students: Agnes Perez, Shangyi Fu, Sophie Fang, Apurba Apu, Arianna Galvan, and Anahi Fernandez!!

 

Pershing Wins Gold and Silver Keys in the Scholastic Art Contest

Several Pershing art students are to be congratulated for their accomplishments this year in the Scholastic Art Contest.  Ariana Galvan received a Gold Key for a color reduction print.  Apu Apurba and Christine Njoku both won Silver Keys.  Shangyi Fu, Kimani Hogan, Kevin Koy, and Agnes Perez all won Honorable Mentions.  Ariana Galvan also won an Honorable Mention for an oil painting.  The Gold Key work will be exhibited from Saturday, Jan. 13th through Feb. 8th at the Art League of Houston.  Winners will be honored at a special exhibit and ceremony held at the Harris County Department of Education on Feb. 13th from 7:00 till 8:30pm.  Silver Key work will be shown from Sat, January 7th through Thurs, Jan 29th at Texas Art Supply.  The awards ceremony honoring their students will take place on Jan. 22nd and Jan 29th from 2:30 till 3:00.  This contest is regional and is very competitive.  Winning is a very great accomplishment.  Congratulations to our excellent students!!!!

Pershing Middle School Competes in UIL Competition

The 8th Grade advanced Theatre class will be participating in the HISD Middle School UIL competition at West Briar Middle School on Wednesday November 9 at 5:00 pm. Tickets are $3.00 for non-participating students and $5.00 for adults. It is free for all HISD faculty with an ID badge.

Region Orchestra Auditions are Approaching

It’s that time of year again! It’s time for the annual TMEA All-Region Orchestra auditions for Region 23! If you are in the Pershing Orchestra and you plan on taking the audition on Saturday, October 1st, then you need to fill out an entry contract and turn in the $15 entry fee to Mr. Whatley by Friday, September 9th. This is the absolute last day that money and entry fees can be turned in, so please be sure not to miss this important deadline if you plan to audition.

Entry forms can be picked up near Mr. Whatley’s office in the orchestra room (411). Please e-mail any questions about the audition process to Mr. Whatley at rwhatley@houstonisd.org.
